All About Alaska

When I think of Alaska I think of a cold barren place with lots of ice and snow, and maybe some igloos. Apparently there is more to Alaska than I thought.

Located in the upper northwest region of the North American continent, Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area (larger than the combined area of the next 3 largest states: Texas, California, and Montana) and one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse. Go figure!

Alaska is actually quite a beautiful place with 17 of the top 20 highest peaks in the United States. The icy state also boasts natural wonders like the Yukon River, the third longest river in the U.S. and glaciers like Malaspina the largest in the state.

According to the official state website there are three big misconceptions about Alaska.

Weather is the #1 misconception. Over a third of all vacation/pleasure visitors found the weather better than expected. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s.

Road conditions are usually better than expected. Almost the entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and approximately half of the roads in the state’s highway system are paved.

The third misconception is price. Contrary to popular belief, prices throughout Alaska are generally quite reasonable.

Who knew Alaska could be so pleasant? Next time, I take a vacation I just go to Alaska. It sure sounds a like a great place with plenty of natural wonders to take in.

Travel Tips

Travel Auction

By now you’ve probably used an online booking site like Expedia or Travelocity. These sites are easy to use and often offer great deals on travel packages, hotels, car rentals, and flights. But, there is an even more fun and easy way to book your travels online! Consider participating in a travel auction! Online travel auction sites allow users to bid on a variety of travel deals and may offer greater savings than other online travel sites. Just like any other auction site, users search for and then bid on specific “items” during the bidding period, when the bidding period ends the user with the highest bid wins the item. Typically, travel details are entered after a winner is chosen.

Here are some helpful tips for using a travel auction site:

· Be patient. Travel auction sites are getting very popular and some people are bidding way over cost but deals can still be found if you are patient.

· Read all the fine print, as there may be taxes and fees that can increase the price. Sometimes the increase can be quite significant so you should consider the total cost (after tax and fees) when bidding for an item.

· Be flexible. Travel auctions are not ideal for travelers that require traveling on specific dates. Sometimes you may purchase the item and then chose dates at a later date.

· It may be helpful to know on average what the cost would be through a travel agent or other site. If the bids get too high, it may be easier to go elsewhere.

· See if there are any auction alert systems available on the site. Use this function to track your auctions. If available, it may be beneficial to see how items have been selling in the past. This can help you establish a maximum bidding price.

Sometimes booking travel and planning may be boring and tedious but with travel auctions, you can have fun while getting a great deal. To get started check out skyauctions.com!

Nevada Travel

For many Americans experiencing Las Vegas is one of those trips that make the bucket list of things to do before kicking the bucket. But whether this is your first time visiting or it is part of your yearly retreat Las Vegas will always keep you wanting more. Internationally renowned as the major resort city for gambling, shopping, and entertainment, the city of Las Vegas, also known as Sin City and The Entertainment Capital of the World, is the most populous city in the state of Nevada and the largest American city founded in the 20th century. The Las Vegas Strip (also known commonly as The Strip) is a 4-mile section of Las Vegas Boulevard South that is perhaps the most renowned district of Las Vegas and sees excesses of 38 million visitors in a given year. Along with touting an annual 11 billion dollar gaming revenue the area is also known for being one of the few places in the US where possession and consumption of open containers of alcoholic beverages are allowed year-round, just so long as your not in a vehicle. Many of the largest hotel, casino and resort properties in the world are located on The Strip, and include such famous casino names as: Tropicana, Excalibur, Boardwalk, Bellagio, Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, Luxor, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, Paris Las Vegas and New York-New York. These are just a glimpse of what you can find on the South end of the famous Las Vegas Strip, but have no fear there is still North and middle sections if you haven’t found the one you like. Looking for a short break In between rounds of blackjack and roulette, Las Vegas has hundreds of other entertainment venues where the returns might not be as high but they are guaranteed. Take for instance the shark reef at Mandalay bay hotel, the light and water show at the front of the Bellagio, or the Manhattan Express Rollercoaster at New York/New York Hotel, you can go rock climbing at Gameworks, a huge arcade right in the showcase shopping area adjacent to the MGM Grand. Theme parks more your style? Try Adventuredome at Circus Circus Hotel, or The Stratosphere Tower, with the tallest rollercoaster in the world. If your looking for something free to do check out the Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas. The music is loud and the lights dance above your head. It is an experience. Shows begin at 8:30. Easily the best free Las Vegas attraction. If none of that was to your liking Las Vegas is just as famous for its adult entertainment as it is for its gambling, the entertainment capital of the world isn’t just called Sin City for nothing.

The American Southwest is unlike any other region in the world. Its terrain, wildlife, culture, and history, are one-of-a-kind and are closely allied to the people who originally lived there, the Native Americans, and the settlers that came to the area over the past few centuries. Like other states in the region, Nevada has lush, high-elevation mountain ranges; large valleys; and arid desert plains, such as the Mojave Desert, part of Nevada’s Great Basin. Though its capital is Carson City, Nevada is most famous for another city, Las Vegas! People travel from all around the globe to experience the glitz, the glamour, the food, the biggest luxury hotel and casinos in the world, and of course, the gambling, the state’s primary source of revenue. Here you’ll find impressive live shows with well known celebrities and musicians; unparalleled nightlife in clubs, lounges, and bars of all types; amusement and water park rides for families; shopping and dining for all price ranges; architecture celebrating the diversity of many different countries, and visual attractions of all kinds. Vegas aside, there’s also Lake Tahoe, famous for its high mountain peaks overlooking the picturesque lake, which is particularly breathtaking in winter when skiing the white, powdery slopes while watching the sun sparkle on the lake below. Reno is another popular destination, as is the immense, awe-inspiring Hoover Dam, the tallest dam in North America. Aside from the manmade wonders, Nevada is also prime real estate for hiking, camping, mountain biking, climbing, boating and swimming on its many lakes, hot air ballooning, and other fun, outdoor sports.
